4 Hot Pepper Cold Remedies

The chili heads here at Gourmet Chips & Sauces don’t only love peppers for their spicy taste, we also appreciate their medicinal uses, especially when it comes to stubborn winter colds. Peppers increase blood circulation and have anti-microbial properties which can help kill pathogens. We’re not saying peppers are the magic cure for colds and flu, but they can certainly help speed up the recovery process. Here are a few handy pepper-based cold remedies.

  1. Cayenne Pepper Gargle:

Used to relieve sore throats. Mix ¼ teaspoon of cayenne with cup of warm water and gargle several times a day. Cayenne has anti-microbial properties and can be used to disinfect and kill pathogens that cause sore throats.

  1. Cayenne Pepper Tea:

Used to relieve congestion. Mix a cup of boiling with 1/8 to ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper and honey to taste. Let it stand for about 15 minutes to brew and cool. Sip to relieve congestion and tightness in the chest and to clear sinuses.

  1. Cayenne Honey Throat Syrup:

Another remedy using cayenne and honey is great to sooth hoarseness in your throat. Add 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to 2 tablespoons of honey. Take one teaspoon at a time, holding it in the mouth for as long as possible to sooth a sore throat.

  1. Black Pepper Cold Remedy:

Originating from India, this cold remedy uses a mixture of black peppers and tamarind. Add 50 milligrams of tamarind with 250 millimeters of water and boil. Add 1 teaspoon of melted, clarified butter, and ½ teaspoon of black pepper. You can find tamarind in stores that sell Indian food products. Drink this mixture several times a day to clear congestion in sinuses and nose.

Another remedy involving black pepper suggests that you mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 10 drops of lemon juice and 2 pinches of black pepper to relieve your cold symptoms.

It should also be noted that cayenne is a great source of vitamin C. Ingesting it regularly can help prevent cold and flu and strengthen the immune system.
